2011-2012 Provisional Class Projects

Renovations and More

The Junior League of Mobile had a great 2011-2012 provisional year!  This June, 111 provisionals were promoted to active members. We kicked off the year in August 2011 with a large group meeting where
everyone met each other and started making JLM connections.  Shortly after, the provisionals were able to
pick their small groups and then they were off and running!

We had not one, but three provisional projects this year.  The first was with The Child Day Care Association in October.  We helped to renovate the Nina Nicks Joseph playground. We spread 50 loads of manufacturer-engineered wood fiber in their vast playground to improve the safety of all children at play. We also stained all wood fencing and decking. A new child-size picnic table and raised organic gardening bed were purchased and assembled for the center. Annuals were planted around the center and in front of their sign to eagerly greet the children, parents and workers on Monday!

The second project took place in January at Penelope House. The provisionals renovated the JV Reading Room into a tranquil, multi-use room for prayer, reading, and meditation. It is now a room with comfortable furnishings, more books and shelves to house them, artwork, curtains that can be fully drawn for privacy, and a sound machine with many sound choices for background ”Zen”. We also painted the border of nine client rooms. These rooms are used for transitioning women and their children out of harm’s way. Previously the bedrooms had been one color with no artwork. In conjunction with Renee from Paint Party studios, we were able to make 27 paintings. Three companion paintings were hung in each of the nine rooms. We used paint choices of light sage green and blue as a border above the wall board to enhance a feeling of coziness.

Last but certainly not least, the third project took place in April at St. Mary’s Home where the amazing group of provisionals were able to update the Entrance Foyer, Check-in Office, and Board Room. We used our funds to pay to have the dated, fabric-based wallpaper removed. We used other funds to have the old cove base molding and carpet removed and new carpet and molding placed. We were fortunate to combine resources with other community agencies who donated the carpet, and United Way who applied the primer to the walls during their Day of Caring. It was a week of orchestrated beauty! Dominique Hicks, Junior League Sustainer and owner of Feather Your Nest Interiors, Inc., donated her time and talent as an interior designer to assist us in choosing pleasing, professional paint and fabric choices. She was also instrumental in helping us acquire amazing artwork  from the artists at Prayers on The Side, particularly the two original paintings that now hang on either side of the Chapel doors. We also painted walls in the newly carpeted Boardroom and Check In office off of the Foyer. We ordered and placed new slipcovers and pillows on the existing furniture. Our members then cleaned the windows, furniture and walls.

After all that we still had time for small group and large group meetings!  In January the small groups combined with one or two other small groups and preformed skits or presentations on JLM council systems.  It was a very fun and informative meeting.  It all came to a close at the project reveal and end of the year provisional party at the Mobile Arts Council.  Here everyone had a great time, and Rebecca Satterwhite was named provisional of the year!!

Thanks for a great year!!
